The most important rule after a Traditional Retwist, Mid-Back Length is simple: keep your roots dry and hands off for the first 48 to 72 hours. Your retwist is training new growth to lay in a clean, cylindrical rotation (we often use the comb coil method, and sometimes add locksmithing or a wrap method when the new growth needs it). Give it time to set, especially with Indianapolis humidity working overtime.
First 24 to 48 hours: keep the parting crisp
Right after your 150-minute Traditional Retwist, Mid-Back Length appointment, your roots look their neatest. The fastest way to lose that look is moisture plus friction. In the first day or two, we generally recommend you:
Do this: keep your scalp dry, keep your style stable, and keep your hands out of your roots.
The “don’t touch it” list
- Don’t mist, rinse, or “just wet the edges.” Even a little water at the scalp can puff the new growth and soften the hold.
- Don’t over-style it. Tight ponytails, hard rubber bands, and constant re-positioning create frizz fast and can add tension where you don’t need it.
- Don’t load up on heavy product. Wax, thick butters, and heavy creams can slide the retwist and leave buildup that’s tough to remove on mid-back locs.
If you have to be out in the heat
Indianapolis summers, especially a hot, humid July day, can make roots swell up faster. If you’re headed to an outdoor event, keep your hair in a breathable, low-tension upstyle and let your scalp stay as dry as possible. If you sweat, pat at the scalp with a clean cloth. Don’t rub. Rubbing lifts the root area and starts that fuzzy halo.
Days 3 to 7: sleep, commute, and frizz control that actually works
Once you’re past that first 48 to 72-hour window, your retwist usually holds better, but week one is still a “gentle handling only” phase. This is when little habits decide if your parts stay sharp or start blending together.
Sleep so your roots don’t fuzz up
Use a satin bonnet or a satin pillowcase. If your locs are mid-back, gather them into a loose pineapple or a low bun so they aren’t rubbing your collar or getting smashed under your head all night.
Seatbelts and long drives matter
If you’re commuting through Indianapolis, especially along the East 56th Street corridor, keep your locs positioned so they’re not snagging in the seatbelt or being rubbed by a jacket collar. That constant friction shows up as frizz at the roots and fuzzy ends.
Pool season rules (especially for families)
Chlorinated water can dry out locs and rough up the cuticle. We generally recommend avoiding pools for 1 to 2 weeks after a retwist. If you can’t skip it, use a swim cap, then rinse immediately after and let your hair air-dry.
And yes, East 56th Street corridor clients often fit appointments into busy days. If you need a quick protective style that won’t get crushed during an evening commute, stick with low-tension, contained styles over anything tight or high-friction.
Products for mid-back loc aftercare: light, clean, and residue-free
Mid-back locs hold onto product longer than shorter lengths. That’s why we keep your aftercare simple. Think in product types, not a crowded shelf.
- Lightweight scalp oil: a few drops, not a full squeeze. Focus on the scalp, not coating the locs.
- Water-based spray: if you need a refresh, keep it light and avoid soaking the roots in that first week.
- Residue-free cleanser (when it’s time): when you do wash, choose something that rinses clean so your retwist doesn’t end up looking dull or sticky.
Quick rule: If a product feels creamy, heavy, or waxy between your fingers, it tends to build up in locs. Keep it light.
When to reach out to Loc Seeds in Indianapolis (and when it’s totally normal)
A little tightness or tenderness right after a retwist can be normal, especially if you’re sensitive at the crown or you’ve had a lot of new growth. That feeling usually settles as your scalp relaxes. What we don’t want is pain that gets worse, bumps that weren’t there before, or a scalp that feels irritated and angry.
Message us if you notice:
- Tenderness that doesn’t calm down after 48 hours
- Itching that feels intense or nonstop
- A section that unraveled quickly (especially around edges or softer textures)
We’re on the East 56th Street corridor on Indianapolis’ Far East Side, and we also support follow-ups and quick fixes for nearby areas like Lawrence, Warren Park, Broad Ripple, Irvington, and Cumberland. If something feels off, let us know early so it stays simple.
