I’ll give you the honest range upfront: an Interlock Retie, Any Length typically lasts about 4–8 weeks. Plan on the shorter end (4–6) if your hair grows fast or you wash often, and closer to 8+ if your growth is slower and you protect your retie at home. And yes, the little details matter, like starting with a solid wash and hot oil treatment so your scalp feels clean and calm going into maintenance.
The 4–8 week interlock maintenance schedule (and what moves the number)
When people search interlock retie duration, they usually want one number. The truth is you get a range because your hair and your routine decide the finish line as much as my technique does.
Expect 4–6 weeks if:
- You wash weekly (or you sweat a lot and need frequent cleansing).
- Your hair grows fast and you see new growth quickly at the base.
- Indianapolis humidity in summer makes your roots puff and frizz sooner.
- You wear hats/hoods often or your locs rub on collars and pillowcases.
You can stretch 7–8+ weeks if:
- Your wash schedule is less frequent and you dry thoroughly every time.
- You sleep with satin or silk consistently, not “sometimes.”
- You keep your hands out of your hair (low manipulation makes a big difference).
- Winter is drying your scalp out and you stay on top of light moisture and oil.
Indianapolis reality check: humid summers can make roots expand and look “older” faster, and dry, heated winters can trigger scalp dryness that has people scratching and disturbing the base. Your aftercare needs to shift with the season.
8 interlock retie care tips I give clients to get the full 4–8 weeks
I’m big on the “whole loc experience” because longevity starts before I ever touch your roots. In my chair, that often looks like a thorough wash, steam, and focused scalp comfort so you’re not leaving tight, itchy, or product-heavy. At home, these are the habits that usually keep the retie looking neat the longest.
- Wait a little before your first wash. Give your retie a short settling period so the base isn’t disturbed immediately. If you need to cleanse sooner because of sweat or your scalp, keep it gentle and focus on drying (tip #2).
- Dry your roots completely every time. Damp bases are a big reason people feel like their retie didn’t “hold.” Use a hood dryer if you have one, sit under a dryer at a salon, or blow-dry on low with patience. Don’t go to bed with wet locs.
- Use light moisture, not heavy butter. Heavy products love to sit at the base, grab lint, and create buildup that makes reties look fuzzy faster. If you want something from me, this service includes your choice of All-Purpose Loc Oil or a Hydration Treatment, and I’ll point you to the best option for your scalp that day.
- Sleep like you care about your parts. Satin or silk scarf, bonnet, or pillowcase. Consistency is what keeps friction from “roughing up” the base.
- Stop twisting and rolling the new growth. Interlocking is meant to be low-manipulation. If you constantly retwist the base with your fingers, you can loosen the pattern and create frizz.
- Be mindful with workouts and humidity. In Indy summers, sweat and humidity can have your roots swelling quickly. Cleanse your scalp as needed, then dry thoroughly and protect at night.
- Avoid tight styles on a fresh retie. High tension ponytails, tight barrels, or updos right away can stress the base. Give it time, then style without pulling.
- Let me know if anything feels off. Discomfort isn’t something you “push through.” If you feel tightness, soreness, or you notice slipping early, speak up so we can adjust your plan next visit.
“Amazing experience. Best hair wash I have had for my locs. Truly felt like I was at a spa. Fancy is very professional and she took her time with my hair and ensured my comfort throughout the entire appointment.”

Why interlocks loosen early: 5 common mistakes I see (and the quick fix)
If your retie looks “old” fast, it’s usually not because interlocking doesn’t work. It’s because one or two habits are undoing the work at the base.
- Wetting without drying: cleanse as needed, then commit to fully drying your roots.
- Product buildup: go lighter, focus product on the length, and keep the base clean.
- Friction: switch to satin or silk and watch hats, hoodies, and coat collars.
- Too much separating or pulling: separate gently after washing, not aggressively every day.
- Waiting too long: if you’re past your window, you can end up with more new growth to manage and a longer appointment.
Week-by-week plan: what to do after your Interlock Retie (Weeks 1–8)
Weeks 1–2: protect the base
Keep manipulation low. Cover at night. If you wash, keep it gentle and dry completely. This is when you set the tone for the whole maintenance cycle.
Weeks 3–5: maintain clean scalp habits
This is the sweet spot for most people. Stay on top of cleansing and drying. Use light moisture, especially if winter indoor heat is drying you out.
Weeks 6–8: watch your new growth signals
If you’re seeing a lot of new growth at the roots, base frizz that won’t lay down, or any loose interlocks, it’s time to grab your next retie. Some people can push past 8 weeks, but many end up happier rebooking here.
Quick studio note: Interlock Retie, Any Length is scheduled for 170 minutes and priced at $250. If we exceed 3 hours, additional time is billed at $150/hr. I’d rather pace correctly and protect your scalp than rush through it.
When to rebook on East 56th Street (especially if you commute or wash weekly)
Most of my regulars settle into a simple rhythm: every 4–6 weeks if you wash often, work out a lot, or your hair grows fast. If your growth is slower and you protect your hair at night, you can often do 6–8 weeks.
I’m on the East 56th Street corridor on Indianapolis’ Far East Side in Warren Township, close to Broad Ripple and Irvington. People come in from Lawrence, Warren Park, Beech Grove, Irvington, and Cumberland for maintenance, especially when they want something that holds between washes.
Rebook sooner if you notice:
- Visible new growth you can’t smooth down
- Loose interlocks at the root
- Scalp discomfort or tightness
- Frizz at the base that’s changing the look of your parts
A simple next step
If you’re deciding if interlocking is worth it for your routine, start with your wash frequency and your growth rate. Then choose a retie window that keeps you comfortable, not just “neat.”
You can also read retie maintenance on the East 56th Street corridor to see how locals keep their schedule realistic through Indy seasons.
One important note: Interlock Retie, Any Length is not for microlocs. If you’re not sure which category your locs fall into, ask before booking so I can guide you to the right service.
Pricing, timing, and what’s included in Interlock Retie, Any Length
Interlock Retie, Any Length
170 minutes | $250
I interlock your new growth so it’s permanently locked into the length of the loc, which is why this maintenance option tends to last longer. Your appointment also includes your choice of (1) Loc Seeds product: All-Purpose Loc Oil or our Hydration Treatment. If we exceed 3 hours, additional time is billed at $150/hr.
