Ready for Your First First Consultation? What to Expect and Bring
By Loc Seeds | October 8, 2026
I hear it all the time: you want someone who’s knowledgeable about healthy loc hair and professional, but you also don’t want to walk in feeling unsure of what’s about to happen. If you’re nervous about your first consultation, that’s normal. The good news is a consultation with me is straightforward. We talk through your goals, your hair history, what you’re doing at home right now, and what’s realistic for your timeline and budget. You’ll leave with a clear plan and next steps, and I won’t surprise you with add-ons or jump into a service unless we’ve agreed on it first.
A quick reset: what a Consultation is (and what it isn’t)
A consultation is an information-first appointment. I’m looking at the condition of your hair and scalp, listening to what you want, and helping you map out the smartest way to get there. This is where we talk about things like parting preferences, the look you’re going for, and what’s been frustrating you, especially if you’ve been somewhere else and the parts or technique just weren’t hitting the mark.
And to keep it clear, a consultation is not the same as a full service day. Sometimes people ask because they’ve heard I can move fast. I have helped a call-in new client with a consultation and then started locs the same day. But that only happens when it’s discussed and it makes sense for your hair, your time, and the schedule.
Local note: If you’re coming down the East 56th Street corridor in Indianapolis, you’re usually in and out quickly enough to fit this in before work, after a shift, or between errands. We’re a convenient stop for people coming from Broad Ripple and Irvington too.
Your consultation checklist: 5 things that make the visit easier
If you do one thing before you come in, do this: show up ready to tell me what you want and what you’ve already tried. People tell me scheduling is easy and the consultation feels quick and simple when they come prepared with the basics.
- Photo inspo (2 to 4 pics). Bring examples of part size, density, and finish you like. If you’re picky about parts, photos help me match your eye.
- Your hair history. Tell me about coloring, previous installs, buildup issues, tight styles, thinning spots, or anything that’s made your scalp mad.
- A medication list. This matters because certain medications can affect dryness, shedding, and scalp sensitivity. You don’t have to bring records. A simple list is enough.
- ID. If we need it for intake, you’ll have it.
- Questions you actually care about. Write them down. People forget once we start talking. Ask about timeline, maintenance frequency, and what products you should stop using.
One more thing: let me know if you’re trying to coordinate for a child too. I work with families, and I’ve had parents tell me the experience was top notch for them and their son. That matters in the planning stage.
When you walk in: how the Consultation flows, step by step
I keep the vibe calm, clean, and professional. People mention the ambiance a lot, and I take that seriously because your first visit shouldn’t feel tense. I’ll greet you, get you settled, and we’ll start with a few questions so I understand what’s going on with your hair and what you want it to do next.
1) Intake questions that actually matter
I’ll ask about your current routine, any scalp concerns, your work or lifestyle needs, and your end goal. This isn’t busywork. It’s how I decide what’s realistic and what’s going to keep your locs healthy long-term.
2) Hair and scalp check, plus parting and style preferences
We’ll talk through details like part size and neatness. I know some people are very particular about parts. I’ve had new clients tell me they tried several other places and still couldn’t get the parts right. If that’s you, say it out loud. I’d rather know up front than guess.
3) Recommendations, timeline, and pricing clarity
Before you leave, you’ll have a plan. I’ll explain what I recommend, how often you’ll likely need maintenance, and what steps come first. If products come into the conversation, I’ll tell you why. People like the way our products smell, and I also get a lot of feedback about healthy results, including shine and growth when they stick with a consistent routine. But I’m never going to push a shelf of stuff at you. We’ll keep it practical.
Timing note: My listed Consultation service is 15 minutes at $55. If you’re booking a Loc Maintenance Consultation specifically, that visit runs about 60 minutes because I’m giving you personalized maintenance tips to care for your locs between appointments.
"Easy scheduling, consultation was quick and easy."
one of our first-time clients
If you’re coming from Lawrence, Warren Park, Beech Grove, Broad Ripple, Irvington, or Cumberland, this is the kind of appointment that makes the drive worth it. You’re not leaving with confusion. You’re leaving with a direction.
After your Consultation: next steps, rebooking, and keeping locs healthy
After your consultation, the next step is usually booking the service that matches your plan. Sometimes that’s starting locs. Sometimes it’s maintenance. Sometimes it’s addressing dryness and buildup first. If we’ve talked about hydration, steam, or a hot oil moment, it’s because people genuinely notice a difference when their scalp and strands are cared for the right way.
At home, I generally recommend you keep it simple between visits: don’t overload your scalp with heavy products, keep an eye on flakes or irritation, and protect your locs at night so you’re not fighting lint and frizz. If you’re using something that isn’t working, tell me. I’ll help you clean it up.
Rebooking tip: If you know you’re commuting via I-465 or you need an early-morning or evening slot, plan ahead. That way you’re not scrambling right before an event or work week.
My best new-client Consultation tips for East 56th Street in Indianapolis
Here’s the honest inside tip that saves you time and stress: don’t wait until you’re in my chair to decide what you can’t stand. If you’re picky about parts, say that first. If you want your locs to look a certain way for work or a special date, tell me the deadline. That’s how I build a plan that fits your life.
People come back because they feel taken care of. I’m on time, I keep it professional, and I don’t rush the details. I also use my own products, including options people love like CBD oil for loc care. When you’re trying to decide who gets to touch your hair, consistency matters.
If you’re ready, book your consultation, come with your questions, and let’s get your plan clear. You’ll leave knowing what we’re doing, why we’re doing it, and what your next appointment needs to be.
